Brighton & Hove Food Partnership
The Brighton & Hove Food Partnership help people improve health, wellbeing and skills through food activities. They work at a city level on food poverty, teaching cookery, therapeutic gardening, food waste and nutrition; particularly with vulnerable adults and people experiencing deprivation, isolation, ill health and other life challenges. Their work makes lasting changes to habits and behaviours which improve lives. We all eat, and food is central to life’s celebrations and memories – food activities can engage a wide range of people. Their approach uses this power of food to bring about change.
In 2018 they opened a social enterprise - The Community Kitchen - a purpose-built cookery school on Queens Road in central Brighton where everyone can cook, learn new skills and enjoy food together.
Any profits raised from the Community Kitchen's classes and private hire support community cookery activities – including multi-week courses for people with learning disabilities, those living on low incomes, people with long term health conditions (including dementia), physical and mental health issues
Evaluation of the work of the kitchen shows that we are increasing skills and confidence is cooking from scratch using fresh and healthy ingredients, reducing social isolation, improving self-esteem and improving diets.
Social Investment from Postcode Innovation Trust, thanks to players, will develop their Community Kitchen by investing in capital equipment, marketing and personnel with the intention of increasing traded income generated from sales of cookery classes, private hires, parties and corporate events. This will help the organisation become more sustainable and less reliant on grant income.
It will provide a high-quality community kitchen to run community food work from, and they hope that in the longer term, profits generated thanks to the marketing of the private hire and classes can be used to fund community courses.
